On April 30 at Chisholm Trail High School, the L.D. Bell ladies gymnastics team won the Texas High School Gymnastics State Championships.
After 40 years of coaching and now 17 team state championships, Coach Debbie Williams is proud to call these athletes her team.
Through rigorous training and hard work, many members went home with more than one title.
Sophomore Kaitlin Hornsby received 9th on beam and sophomore Kyleigh Prather received 5th on vault, 6th on bars, and 5th all-around. Senior Amanda White won 7th on beam, 3rd on both vault and floor, and 7th all around. Alexis Martin had a very successful season, receiving 2nd on bars, 4th on beam, State Floor Champion, All-Around Runner-Up, and District Uneven Bar and Floor Champion.
The boys gymnastics team also experienced a successful season. At District competition, the team won District Runner-Up and Senior Mikko Macapagal received District Pommel Horse Champion.
This was the 50th year for high school gymnastics in Texas, a program started at Bell by Coach Emil Milan in the 1960s. The sport’s pioneer, Milan passed away on May 2, not long after the Bell girls team won its 20th state championship.
